Reading has always been some form of escape for me, no matter the genre. I feel like since lockdown in March, I’ve been reaching for bookshelves more than normal this year. This month, I read and reviewed three books.

Where the Crawdads Sing by Delia Owens
I initially bought this book toward the beginning of quarantine because of the excitement that was still surrounding it, even two years after publication. While I liked the descriptive writing style, the story itself and ending left me wanting more.
I still haven’t figured out if it fell flat for me because the storytelling or the last 100 or so pages felt rushed. Regardless, I did rate it 3/5 overall based on the writing, story, and ending. It’ll still be awhile before I pick it up for a re-read.
A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseini
I’ve had this book for a few years, and I’ve read it a few times now. I’m such a fan of Hosseini’s writing and his storytelling. I typically don’t like books that switch perspectives a lot, but he does it so effortlessly.
Being from the States, I feel that we have a warped understanding of the Middle East, but books like this—even though it’s considered fiction—show readers some of the real events, culture, and life in Afghanistan during those time periods.
Without a doubt I will always give this book a 5/5 rating.
An Absolutely Remarkable Thing by Hank Green
I re-read this book so I can start reading the sequel. I read it back in 2018 when it originally came out, and while I remembered the largest plot points, I wanted to have a refresher before starting the sequel.
I really like the way Hank Green tells stories. Like I mentioned in my original review, he writes like it’s a conversation between the narrator and the reader. I’m not a big science fiction reader or fan, but this was the perfect novel to get me interested in the genre.
Now, I can’t say I’m going to start reading a bunch of science fiction novels now, but I do like the approach he took to this 4/5 rated novel. I can’t wait to read more of the sequel as I’ve heard nothing but great things about it.
What I’m Currently Reading

To give a sneak peek into what’s coming in future reviews, I wanted to include some books that I am currently reading. I’m one of those readers that reads at least three books at a time. I do split up the reading time of them and some I may spend more time on than others, but it’s rare that I’m reading just one book. I also listen to audiobooks, so keep your eyes out for an audiobook review in the future!
